Experience of Karnali


Working as the project staff to implements different level of activities in  Karnali region based on Jumla district. Program was  more focused on gender based violence, chhaupadi and abortion rights and provisions.

The major activities of the Program were:-

6.      ANM training for Medical Abortion (MA)

9.      District Level Stakeholders Sharing Program
10.  Satellite Health Camp (Implant and IUCD camp)
11.  Charter Right Publication (Hoarding Board)
12.  Days Celebration (Safe Abortion Day, Int'l Girls Child Day, Int'l Peace Day, 16 Days Activism, Mensuration Day)
13.  Declare Chhaupadi Free Village (Dhimkot-09, Kudari V.D.C)/ Exposure Visit
14.  Balance Counseling  training for ANMs
15.  VDC Orientation, Group Orientation
16.  VCAT Exercises
17.  District Level Orientation on  Project
18.  Model Man Selection
19.  MA and Implant equipment support and listed the service center

Major Outcomes of the Project
Ø  Group members are aware about the family planning measures and safe abortion practices.
Ø  More than 90 percent of the group members are involving in active participation of discussion
Ø  5 percent of the group women member are involving in decision making role in V.D.C Level.
Ø  24 Women members are involving in income generating activities like (Poultry Farm, Agriculture works, Rabbit Farm, General Store/ Kirana Shop) through monthly saving in a group.
Ø  Mostly those women's who used to stay in cowshed during menstruation period (Chhaupadi) were now staying in their home these days.
Ø  Local People from different working V.D.C and nearby V.D.Cs get services of Implant and Safe Abortion.
Ø  Among the Group people maintain harmony and reduction of the gender based violence.
Ø  Service seeker of Medical Abortion is benefited and gets effective service in district level well.

Responses from Public
The local people from every V.D.Cs where  we are working for this program where they get directly or indirectly benefits. Those people want to continue with the program and they seek to be involved with the program for long term.

Challenges
Ø  Geographical structure of the district.
Ø  Insufficient Technology and Information system.
Ø  Deep attachment with Cultural and tradition.
Ø  Lack of knowledge regarding the Safe Abortion and its legal provision among the local people.
Ø  Insufficient link up and tie up with likeminded organization.
Ø  Seasonal migration, climatic situation and work overload of women among the village women.
Ø  Tough Public partnership
